April Webinar Guest Experts
Wayne Bowers, Executive Director of Cure-Sort
Having successfully controlled a once chaotic life with the therapy approach at the Johns Hopkins Sexual Disorders Clinic, Baltimore, MD, directed by Dr. Fred Berlin, Bowers has chosen to promote the importance of treatment, as opposed to punishment and retaliation. In learning a control strategy during that initial four-month stay and during three different groups during a second Kansas prison stint of five years, Bowers returned to Baltimore and participated in Berlin’s own program, the National Institute for the Study, Prevention and Treatment of Sexual Trauma for six years as he pieced his life back together. He later moved to the Lansing, MI, area to further the work of advocacy. Opportunities arose then to promote the success of therapy and Bowers saw the significance of telling his story. He moved to Oklahoma in 2007 for family reasons.
Sex Offenders Restored through Treatment (SORT) is an issue chapter of Citizens United for the Rehabilitation of Errants (CURE) and is it’s outreach program for incarcerated and accused sex abusers and their families. SORT works to promote restoration of people who have sexually offended by establishing alternatives to incarceration; and to foster a sense of community, responsibility, and concern between offenders nationwide. SORT’s support includes correspondence with men and women incarcerated for sex offenses and the CURE-SORT Newsletter.
